Swinton Greenway

Project Overview

The Swinton Greenway proposals will enhance both the off-road and on-road routes to encourage the communities in and around the Greenway to make more sustainable journey choices such as walking and cycling, creating healthier and more attractive neighbourhoods to live in.

The spin of the route follows a former railway line, running between Monton Road in Monton (to the side of Wendover Court) and the A6 Manchester Road in Swinton (near Swinton Football Club), with the enhancements including a number of additional links to the wider communities, providing connections to the main route for Monton Green Primary School, Eccles College, Oakwood & Chatsworth High Schools and Community College and Springwood Primary School, all of which will have direct access to the route once completed.

The route will be as accessible and useable as possible and for as many users as possible and will cover a total length of approx. 7.2km, 5.7km of which will be traffic-free and the remainder being made up of on-road enhancements. The on-road enhancements to the highway and footway include the introduction of several controlled pedestrian crossings to help reduce the severance impact of roads and open up the Greenway to more communities.

The project briefly consists of;

• The Construction of a new 3.0-3.5m wide paths

• Woodland Management -This element of work will be starting w/c 4th January 2021

• Highway enhancements, including new footways and resurfacing of existing footways and new controlled pedestrian crossings
